Note about the book  'Traditional Occupations of Goa'

Alarmed at the fact that our Traditional Occupations are being abandoned by their practitioners, Pantaleao Fernandes decided to document a few of the rare occupations that almost gave Goa its identity.

Some of them include weaving of garments using the handloom 'Haatmaag', extracting coconut oil using a wooden contraption, driven by a bullock, crossing the river using the Taria Mama's canoe, making strong rope with our own coconut coir, making and fabricating the temple tasso and many more.

In all fifty occupations are painstakingly photo documented accompanied by a brief description of the activity, as described by the artisans themselves. this collection is now put together in a coffee-table book form and remains an important ethnographic document in the life span of Goa. Besides describing their occupations, they also share their pride in the work and the compulsions which make their children quit them. this is a 'must have' book that every Goan must possess.
